Warm thoughts, gifts

Just inside the front door of Eskaton's Kennedy Manor is a tree unadorned with twinkling lights, brightly-colored glass bulbs or shinny tinsel.

The decorations on this little tree are quite simple, but they are ones that won't be packed up after the holidays and stored for anther Christmas.

Instead, the little mittens, hats and scarfs dangling from the Christmas tree will be given away to elementary school children just before their holiday break. >> Read more

Survivor's saga takes new turn

Minoru "Mino" Ohye is perhaps the only man alive who has served in both the Japanese Imperial Army and the U.S. Army.

He was conscripted by the Japanese in World War II, captured by the Russians in Manchuria in 1945 and sent to a Siberian prison camp.

He survived temperatures of 60 below zero. In 1951, he returned to Northern California, where he was born. That same year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.

On Friday, Ohye, 85, will be featured as the grand marshal for West Sacramento's Veterans Day Parade. >> Read more

Connecting generations

As the first graders descend from the bus, they look wide-eyed at the trimmed grounds and immaculate exterior of the gigantic Eskaton senior living facility.

"This is a nice house!” cooes one young girl standing next to her excited classmates, all of them sporting a blue “Eskaton’s Kohler Kids Connection” t-shirt.

She is one of 28 Sacramento-area elementary students visiting the senior facility as part of Eskaton’s intergenerational initiative Kids Connection, which pairs young students with older adults during the school year. These “buddies” will share letters, stories, poems, plays, songs, meals, memories and even new technology like Skype. >> Read more

Supercentenarians - the oldest old - push limits of human life span

The oldest old – supercentenarians, as aging experts refer to them – remain rare: Clarke is one of four Sacramento-region residents who reported their ages as 110 or older in the 2010 U.S. census, though she's likely the only one to receive a birthday card each year from the queen.

Alda Curry lived on her own until well past 100. Now, at 106, she lives in nursing care at Sacramento's Eskaton Greenhaven facility. >> Read more

Adult day care cuts leave seniors in the lurch

Once the model for the nation to keep the elderly and disabled out of expensive nursing homes, California will cease to offer adult day healthcare on December 1 after Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a bill that would have kept adult day care centers open throughout the state.

The Legislature completely eliminated funding and Brown vetoed a proposal this week for a replacement program that could have helped about 35,000 of the neediest clients.>> Read more
