Eskaton has begun construction on a national demonstration home to be located on the Eskaton Village Roseville campus in Roseville, California. This 1800 square foot, single-family residence, expected to open in the summer 2008 for public tours, embraces senior smart innovations in home design, digital health, lighting technologies and eco-friendly building practices.

The Eskaton National Demonstration Home embraces best practices from many fields that will be incorporated into future Eskaton communities. The home contains the Eskaton-Certified design, which features multiple, invisible benefits of thoughtful infrastructure planning and layout. As an active member of CAST (Center for Aging Services Technologies—www.agingtech.org), Eskaton will showcase emerging technologies that support safety, independence and wellness. For example, one of our collaborating partners, Dakim Inc. provides a stimulating touch-screen brain fitness computer program called [m]-Power geared to maintain and improve memory and thinking skills. Other partners include the California Lighting Technology Center, Intel and other technology providers.

According to a report from The White House Conference on Aging (2005), the number one priority issue is that seniors want to age in their own homes. However, as circumstances change, it can be costly to retrofit a home or move to a setting that provides more care. The Eskaton smart home is designed to “flex” with you and your family. It addresses specific issues around circulation, heights of cabinetry and work areas, and convenience factors. With the support of noninvasive health and wellness technologies and lighting that is both energy-efficient and designed with the senior in mind, the purpose is to provide peace of mind to seniors and their families. Too often homes are built with obstacles that prohibit living safely and independently for a lifetime. Eskaton and their collaborating partners want to demonstrate the feasibility of a senior smart home for life!
